A PRIMARY school which prides itself on being at the heart of the Hyde community is celebrating a milestone this year.
It’s 25 years since the new Greenfield Primary opened at its current site on Queen Street.
The school first opened in 1929 on Greenfield Street but, with the building deemed no longer fit for purpose, the original site was demolished and the school was rebuilt on the site of Slack Mills in 1999.
At the time, pupils had a key role in overseeing the building’s construction and marked the occasion with a special opening ceremony, which was attended by the local MP at the time – Lord Tom Pendry – and Councillor Jim Fitzpatrick.
Fast forward to the present day and pupils, staff and families alike gathered at an assembly, where children learned about the school’s history whilst hearing from staff and former pupils about their memories and achievements.
Also in attendance was the Civic Mayor of Tameside, Hyde councillor Betty Affleck, who told the children how proud they should be to go to such “a delightful school”.
The pupils have also released a commemorative video to celebrate the 25th anniversary which you can watch on the school’s website here.
Zoe Neophitou, Principal at Greenfield, said: “We are incredibly proud of what Greenfield Academy has to offer to the children and wider community.
“It was a very special day celebrating our school and hearing about the positive impact Greenfield has had on so many of our former pupils.”
The school changed its name to Greenfield Primary Academy in 2020 when it moved under the leadership of The Harmony Trust – a multi-academy and school-led organisation based in Tameside, Oldham and Derby.
