Carnival will be back in town in Denton

AN UNFORGETTABLE day of community celebration is promised as carnival fever is set to return to Denton this year.

The town has not had a carnival parade since before the Covid pandemic, back in 2019.

But it has been confirmed that the event will take place on Sunday, September 8.

Dozens of entries are set to dazzle in the parade, which will leave Tatton Road in Haughton Green at 12.30pm before making its way to Denton.

The festivities will then continue in Victoria Park and on the Civic Square, where residents can enjoy live music and performances, a family funfair, and food and drink stalls.

MP Andrew Gwynne said: “Denton Carnival was known for its colourful parades, lively entertainment and family-friendly festivities.

“The pandemic made it impossible to organise for the past few years, and it has taken significant effort for the committee to re-establish itself, find volunteers, and get everything in place. It’s a monumental task but the community spirit is stronger than ever!”

As we reported, in November last year, MP Gwynne and local councillors called on community support in a bid to revive the cherished summer tradition.

An Annual General Meeting then took place in February for interested parties to attend, to help formalise plans to organise the carnival.

Amy Howard, of Howard’s Bar and Market Square Social in Denton, answered the call to serve as Chair of the Carnival Committee.

“I was determined to ensure that Denton got its carnival back,” said Amy.

“I remember coming along as a child and they were such great events! I don’t think we really appreciated the amount of hard work that went into the organising and running of the carnival – all by volunteers, too!”

Denton Carnival is organised entirely by volunteers, who rely on fundraising and generous donations to deliver the event.
