CHRIS Dagnall’s goal 12 minutes from time secured a surprise win for Stalybridge Celtic in the Boxing Day Tameside derby at Hyde United.

The Tigers hopes to go top – even temporarily – of the Northern Premier League with a win or even a draw.

But even though Nick Spooner’s side hit the woodwork twice through Matty Fearnley and Liam Tongue, it was Celtic who scooped the local bragging rights.

For striker Dagnall shot past Dan Atherton from just outside the area, giving the away supporters in a crowd of more than 1,700 reason to celebrate.

Hyde had plenty of chances, with Jack Redshaw’s shot being cleared off the line while Celtic goalkeeper Greg Hall made several good saves.

But the win puts Chris Willcock’s men in touching distance of safety as they battle to stay in the Premier Division.

They next face Liversedge at home on January 2, when Hyde travel to neighbours Ashton United.
