Carrbrook school puts its art into it

A STALYBRIDGE primary school has achieved what it had designs on – a top arts award.

Children at Buckton Vale Primary School in Carrbrook have received the Discover recognition after 30 pupils in Year Four put in plenty of hard work.

Each of them took part in a six-week project working with artist Caroline Coates, while completing an Arts Award linked to Staying Safe with a focus all areas of safety, from road to emotional health and wellbeing.

Everyone learned new creative processes that would assist and support them with resilience.

Also, they had their own ‘wellbeing journal’ to experiment in with different techniques and activities, all focusing on a deeper understanding of their emotions.

In addition, they produced both a roadside banner and an amazing magazine that was full of ideas for staying safe – with Safety Dog, Safety Cat and Safety Fish all helping! These were then shared with all pupils to assist each with remaining safe, with a ’20 is plenty’ banner to alert drivers to slow down among things that have gone around the Swallow Close building.

The achievements were also feted with staff and parents at a celebration assembly.

Buckton Vale Primary headteacher Deborah Brown said: “I am so thrilled with the work the children have created. I must pass on my thanks via you to Caroline whose dedication to this project has been exemplary.

“The outcomes are something we are all so proud of.

“The leaflet shows just how much learning the children have done about how to keep safe. They have explored road safety, fire safety and how people keep us safe.

“As well as all the positive psychology work they have completed, they have also demonstrated their knowledge of our values through messages such as ‘Believe in yourself’ and ‘You can
do it!’

“An extraordinarily brilliant banner was created and I am taken aback at how detailed it is with so much thought having gone into the illustrations.

“It certainly has a very important message to deliver about road safety and we can’t wait to get it up outside our school.

“It was so lovely to see how excited the children were at the presentation and the coming together of families to celebrate was fantastic to see.”

Buckton Vale’s project was funded by Tameside Council’s community safety services team and supported by Tameside Arts and Engagement team.

Arts Award is vital in supporting young people to develop as artists and arts leaders in their communities and Tameside is committed to helping young people achieve their goals in this area by providing opportunities and support for them to flourish and develop within their chosen artistic pathway.
