NEW Stalybridge Celtic manager Chris Willcock is having a different type of discussion with potential signings.
“For the first time as a manager, I have found the cost of living has cropped up in a lot of the conversations,” he explained.
Willcock was hoping by weekend (May 28-29) to have finalised several signings.
By the time The Correspondent went to print, Willcock had spoken to half of last season’s squad.
“Four or five have told me they are looking to remain. Some have said they are looking at other options, but nobody has told me they are definitely leaving,” he explained.
“The players keen to stay want to work under a different regime and ethos, one which will be totally different.
“If they are up for a fresh challenge, that is great.”
Willock added he had already spoken to “a lot of players” but nothing has been finalised.
He continued: “I have agreed some deals, but they are not fully over the line.
“Hopefully there will be some very good signings and we are looking potentially to have some committed by the end of the week.
“It is very, very early and pre-season training still six weeks away with some players on holiday and others looking at their options.
“It is an ongoing process and all about wheeling and dealing, something I am used to.”
