Mancunian Birder to guest host Manchester Festival of Nature

THE virtual Manchester Festival of Nature 2021 is on social media on Sunday, June 27.

In the weeks leading up to the festival, conservation organisations are guest hosting the festival twitter account @mancnature for a week.

From Monday, June 7 to Sunday, June 13, it is the turn of wildlife celebrity James Walsh, who is also known as the Mancunian Birder from the Greater Manchester Birding City Region Project.

James has starred on the BBC’s Urban Jungle, and has written articles for Birdwatching, Birdwatch and the Lancashire Wildlife Trust’s Lapwing magazine. The Greater Manchester Birding City Region Project has supported the festival from the very start in 2019.

He said: “As @mancnature guest host I’ll be introducing some of the work that the GMBCR Project have been doing since we started in March 2018, including encouraging people to complete The Perfect Ten survey and also taking people on a virtual tour of Greater Manchester – think Springwatch meets Countryfile.

“I’ve been cycling around Greater Manchester filming some of our amazing birds and habitats.

“On Tuesday, June 8, we’ll start in Manchester and Salford, then it’s a willow tit special on Wednesday 9 in Wigan and Bolton. This species has just been featured on Springwatch at Wigan Flashes that is being considered for national nature reserve status.

“On Thursday, June 10, the virtual tour visits the reservoirs of Bury and Rochdale, and on Friday, June 11 we are in the owl borough of Oldham and Tameside. We complete the virtual tour on Saturday, June 12 in Stockport and Trafford.”

The GMBCRP is affiliated with the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030 that is being launched on World Environment Day, Saturday, June 5.

“Being the guest host for the Manchester Festival of Nature on social media is a great way to start the new UN Decade on restoring ecosystems,” said James.
