THEY do not claim to be the best thing since sliced bread though it is a subject close to the hearts of musical collective known as Not Ned.And the trio of Paul Macey, Steve Lee and Chris Tollet are rising to the occasion with the release of a debut album and two singles.
How much dough the Denton-based three-piece make remains to be seen.
But after 10 years in existence Not Ned (Denton, backwards, get it?) are delighted their sounds are being heard by new audiences.
Cat Got Your Tongue is the latest release from the album, Every Cloud, and follows on from Pick Up the Phone which made a good impression on local indie charts.
Drummer Paul, aka Taff as he hails from South Wales, singer, songwriter, guitarist Steve and bassist Chris, who runs Bun Voyage in Ashton, formed the band around 10 years ago.
“I moved to Manchester in 2003 and got a job in a flour mill, “explained Paul who still works at Nelstrop’s in Stockport. “Steve (who now works at Warburton’s) was a baker at the time and we just got chatting.
“I had played guitar previously and also learned the bass. He asked would I fill in on the drums and I said ‘yes’ and that was it.
“We played a lot of different places over the years but we got stuck in a bit of a rut. Besides, everything costs money,” added Paul, until recently fulfilling a sporting passion by turning out for Dukinfield Rugby Union Club.
“We ended up just rehearsing and playing the odd gig here and there without actually doing anything.
“Finally, we decided to take things more seriously and here we are now.
“Ideally, if we can make a living out of it and give up our jobs, great.
“But we are realistic enough to know we are unlikely to make loads of money.
“We are happy doing what we are doing. But if someone said ‘Do you want to play Wembley? Do you want to go on a world tour then great.”
The boys recently joined Emmerdale actor Andy Moore to help switch on Glossop Christmas lights.
They also played Salford Winter Festival and this year’s Haughton Green fete.
